I don’t know if this is even worth posting.
Maybe I’m overthinking it.
Maybe there was a perfectly reasonable explanation.
Last night around 02:13 my apartment door locked itself.
Not unusual. The building systems do security sweeps sometimes.
The strange part was that I wasn’t trying to leave.
I was asleep.
The lock cycling woke me up.
A few seconds later I heard shouting somewhere further down the corridor. A man’s voice. Couldn’t make out the words.
Then something hit the wall.
Hard.
The hallway lights switched to night mode.
My television turned on by itself.
Volume 87%.
A Civic Wellness advertisement. The kind with the families smiling and talking about community trust.
I muted it and walked to the door.
The lock wouldn’t disengage.
By the time it did, maybe four or five minutes later, the hallway was empty.
No neighbours.
No security.
No maintenance crew.
Nothing.
Apartment 1708 across from mine was open.
This morning there was a moving notice on the door.
The resident has been relocated to a more suitable accommodation.
Funny.
I spoke to him yesterday.
He never mentioned moving.
